Tourette's Podcast - S3 - Episode 13 - Rusties and Ralphies Per Minute

An episode you'll love with guest Dylan Frost of the UK, whose story of Tourette Syndrome is fairly different than most. It’s led him to question convention while he works as an advocate (a prolific writer on Quora) for the community and addresses the nerves of going back to school with a misunderstood disorder. He also brings a favorite analogy for what it's like living with Tourette tics. Plus: listener questions and a truly, solidly great TS art project.

  • The future of The Amazing Spider-Man franchise was widely reported to be incredibly confusing following this films release. In the build up of the film and indeed the few months after its release, it was confirmed that it would be followed by The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and a Sinister Six spin-off film, with Venom and an untitled female super heroine films as well as The Amazing Spider-Man 4 also confirmed to be in the works. However, in August Sony announced that The Sinister Six would take the place of The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and that the third in the trilogy would be pushed back to an unspecified date in 2018. Then, during a hack into Sony's email, it was revealed with much media coverage that Sony had approached Marvel Studios with a deal to share the rights of the franchise of which Marvel refused. During this period of time, it was also revealed that Sony wished to fire Andrew Garfield due to his speaking out of the production studio and refusal to meet them for company events. After a lengthy silence, Sony and Marvel revealed on 9 February 2015 they would work together to produce a new Spider-Man series (set in the "Marvel Cinematic Universe") and that The Amazing Spider-Man franchise was canceled.

Tourette's Podcast - S3 - Episode 12 - Imitating a Snake

June 14, 2019

Peter Zhao was born and raised through boyhood in China before he moved to the U.S. and became the affable, freestyle-rapping online presence many of you know as Fabulously_Tourette. Peter, while multitasking (finishing up a bowl of soup, later changing his child's diaper and performing other home activities during the conversation) takes us from his youth and early family dynamics to establishing himself in New York and later incorporating Tourette Syndrome into his persona. He used to struggle with aspects of it; he's now content. Peter also gives an interesting explanation of his coprolalia, discusses his own tic-management preferences, and talks with Ben about racial diversity in TS. A rewarding episode covering territory Tourette's Podcast hasn't hit before.

SENSORY NOTE: While it's an awesome conversation, there's some background noise in parts of this episode, as we caught our guest in his duties as a father caring for two children at his home. Sometimes, different background sounds from the phone call overlap and could sound a little chaotic to people sensitive to such things. That doesn't occur throughout the episode, but there are a few, limited parts that get a bit noisy.

Things mentioned during the episode:

On YouTube

The prevalence and epidemiology of Gilles de la Tourette syndrome. Part 2: tentative explanations for differing prevalence figures in GTS, including the possible effects of psychopathology, aetiology, cultural differences, and differing phenotypes. (Thanks, Dr. Conelea!)

YouTube Trending is Biased, Crowder vs. Vox, and More (BSP-170)

On episode 170 of the BSP I discuss a recent analysis done by Coffee Break regarding the bias shown on the YouTube Trending Page, and discuss a battle going on between Vox & Steven Crowder, what I think the true motives are, and what I think you should do with this information.

CLARIFICATION: I do not think my discussion on the second story was clear. To make sure what I said in the 2nd story is not misconstrued, I do not support the doxxing or harassment of individuals. I also think that if you label your self “x,y, or z”, and someone then calls you “x,y, or z”, that should not offend you or be labeled sexist, racist, or homophobic.

I also think that the move towards identitarianism is somewhat damaging. It puts people in groups, leading to a further sense of segregation and in some cases more animus towards one another. I believe that instead of thinking of people as “what boxes do they check on this list of physical/sexual traits”, we should view each person as the culmination of their actions and ideas.

Additionally, if you’re creating content for millions of people, there will inevitably be people who make fun of you and criticize you. That, unfortunately, comes with the territory, and the only way to stop this would be remove all ability to comment, which I think would be more damaging.

I hope that the harassment of Carlos Mazza stops, because harassment is awful, but I do not necessarily think that joking about someone is grounds for banning. If youtube decides that joking about someone is bannable, then no comedians, late night talk show hosts, or even politicians should be allowed on youtube because they have likely ALL done this.

On The Subject: Of Western Movies

Grab your saddle and settle in cause the OTS crew is talking a ride into the old west. We are discussing the history or Westerns, breaking down how they got started and how they “died”. Plus we look at our favorite and why the western has made such an impact on film.

Serial Dime Novels, Comic, Radio shows, TV and so on but we are here to talk Old West Films

Western Genre is a wide range of films that started when film started and has grown and changed as much as the film industry itself. Typically the films center around the American Frontier in the 19th Century but range from Mid 1800s thru early 1900s

Westerns are more of an American Mythology of the west with a Hero Cowboy and lawless times and the every changing new danger world

When we got talkies, the prototypical Western was Stagecoach, which featured all the things audiences of the '30s wanted – John Ford behind the camera, John Wayne in front of it, dangerous Apaches, Monument Valley backdrops and, of course, a stagecoach.

NOTES

  • The title "Parabellum" comes from the Latin phrase: "Si vis pacem, para bellum" which means "If you want peace, prepare for war." It is also an alternate name for the ubiquitous 9mm handgun cartridge ("9mm Parabellum").

  • Halle Berry broke three ribs while filming the movie

  • Keanu Reeves has stated in interviews that he does not want the franchise to be destroyed by sequels and the 'John Wick' series will most likely conclude in Chapter 3.

  • The glass-structure where John fights Shinobi 1 and Shinobi 2 in the film's climax cost $4 million to construct.

  • When Winston welcomes John to the glass penthouse he states that they only use that room for special occasions; to see what the enemy is holding under the table. This is a clear tip-off that Winston is now, indeed, John's enemy and no longer an ally.

An ex-hit-man comes out of retirement to track down the gangsters that killed his dog and took everything from him. Obviously this means we are breaking down the John Wick films and the OTS crew decided there favorite characters, moments and deaths. We also decide what doesn't work in a nearly perfect action movie!

John, is a man of focus. Commitment. Sheer will. Something you know very little about. I once saw him kill three men in a bar… with a pencil. With a fuckin' pencil. Suddenly one day he asked to leave. It was over a woman, of course. So I made a deal with him. I gave him an impossible task. A job no one could have pulled off. The bodies he buried that day laid the foundation of what we are now. And then, my son, a few days after his wife died… you steal his car, and kill his fuckin' dog.
